Weekly Wringer 17: The Themes of Our Chidlhood

Music, all I hear is music. Guaranteed to please. Genesis quotes aside, this weeks Wringer takes the pulse of the community on the best cartoon theme songs of all time. After taking a whilrwind tour through the (awesome) submissions of the community, the Commodore takes some time to talk about his favorites of yesteryear. After declaring the Smurfs theme song the greatest ever (just kidding) he tees up the question for next week which focuses on how sick we all are of apps. Get your phones and your imagination ready for the Weekly Wringer!

Wow, I got mentioned in the ringer! lol

Okay, moving on now... That's a tough one because of breaking reality.... Eh, honestly, I'd just like an app that allows me to have complete access to all my media (Movies, games, music, etc.) at any time by accessing my PC, game consoles, DVD/Blu-Ray players, etc, and watch/play them in the highest quality possible. Throw in the ability to plug the phone into a TV, and I'm set for life.

No comments about this

No comments about this Wringer since I too am tired of hearing about there's an App for that, and have no interest in them.

On second thoughts I would make a free App that is called 'App Manager - Manage all your Apps from one App', and when launched it would delete all other Apps, and 'App Manager' would also be uninstallable/undeletable.

Ow wow,  it's been a while,

Ow wow,  it's been a while, but it is time to dust off the scientific D6!

Here are the 6 app prototypes/ideas that either I've come up with, or would make via a whole heap of plagarism. Roll the D6 to see which I would put into production given the chance and abilities to do so...

1) The El Goonish Shive (from the Webcomic of the same name) app: This app would, whenever accessed, instantly make one random law of physics fail, and the nearest professor of Physics weep openly.

Why?: 2 reasons. 1) El Goonish Shive is awesome; 2) You can make one RANDOM law of physics fail - you'll never have the same results.

2) The Hate Foci app (Copyrighted to Nash/Arlo P. Arlo, of WTFIWWY & Radio Dead Air fame): You can focus all the irrational and rational hate in your body onto any one person or object - the more hatred, the stronger the effects.

Why?: Well, it would clear your mind of all hatred AND blow stuff up real good. Win Win situation.

3) The Necromancy app (Personal Project): This app would restore one person to life for 1 hour, before it losing hold and turning them into the undead - choose carefully.

Why?: A) You could ask some people for answers to questions you never managed to get one for. B) You can start the zombie apocalypse with an app. What's not to like?

4) The Caftiere (I hope that's spelt right...) app (Personal Project): This app would brew you a cup of coffee, however you like it, instantly

Why?: I love coffee. Do I need any other reason?

5) The "Icy Viking" app (Personal Project): This app would automatically protect any accounts or addresses connected to you from spam, trolls and other internet maladies/drama with a 100% success rate.

Why?: Saves a lot of hassle. Nuff said.

6) Ultimate Emulator app (Personal Project): Can instantly, and legally replicate any video game to have existed, perfectly translating it into any language you wish.

Why?: Are you on the wrong website? You don't want to be able to play any game that never left Japan despite it's awesomeness? Or games that have no known copies left?

Hm, it's not really all that extraordinary, but how about an app that would make games randomly appear in my hand?

My response

I want a app that would allow me to control all of reality to change it and modify it at will.

Why...

Because that pretty much gives me control of everything and yeah  i could do what ever i want.

I would like to quickly

I would like to quickly comment, this is the first weekly wringer I watched and I loved it commodore :D!

As for the app, hmm...
Well, being that I enjoy the sort of convenience, I want a portable teleporter. I would love to travel in an instant like that.

Or, my own personal translator that can translate fluently any language I needed.

Thanks for mentioning David

Thanks for mentioning David the Gnome! I didn't see it when Mr. K mentioned it, but wow, good memories.

Uh... an APPLICATION that does anything...? I might change this at a later point, because I don't wanna go just absurd, so............ how about an ap that injects people with Borg nanites? No? An ap that will point toward non-human intelligent societies in space, with filters for (non/human-like minds, non/humanoid bodies, etc.). But this one would work in terms of "hot, cold," so that deep space astronaughts using this ap could become quite flumoxed. Besides, an ap that finds intelligence surely must be lacking intelligence in some way to balance things out. But that one by itself would probably never do me any immediate good. Hmm...  How about an ap that alerts me anytime a girl is checking me out? I might not get notified often, though. :-P

Young Blood, you are dooming us! Dooming us! Okay gravity's not so bad to fail, but if electromagnetism fails, matter will break apart into basic elements or even protons, electrons, and neutrons (Yay high doses of radiation). If weak nuclear forces fail, there'll be a nuclear explosion. If strong nuclear forces fail, you'll create a singularity. Not fun options. (Uh, it's been a while. Maybe I got one of those wrong).

Well I'm going to go outside

Well I'm going to go outside reality, but I don't think i'm going to go too absurd... My App?  A mute button... that's all it does, is mute what/whoever.

"Did you know that there's this new app tha..."
*mute*
Ahh... blissful silence.

My app

Either...

1. Watson: The App.  Keep a Jeopardy champion in your pocket for "trivial emergencies".

2. A universal translator like in the Star Trek: TNG universe.  Ask where the restroom is in every language without causing an international incident or insulting anyones mother.

Or 3. That Beer app does sounds really good. (as long as it is free per use)

Maybe one that does all three!  But that would just turn my phone into an "App Artment".

O.K. I'm done!

Hey Commodore. I'm a newcomer

Hey Commodore. I'm a newcomer to the Weekly Wringer. I've been watching a couple of them before, but I haven't really been commenting and stuff. Thought I'd start that now. It's awesome to hear and see what opinions other people have on different subjects. =)

You didn't mention Darkwing Duck, which is one of my personal favourites. Also, Inspector Gadget's theme is amazing.

To answer today's question... I think a teleporting app would be awesome! Someone else mentioned it, and I think it's a great idea. You can't guess how many times I've wished I can just teleport somewhere in an instant. And it's not because I'm lazy. Haha.

Another one that I'd like, is a universal mute-button, or something like that, for when I need to be alone. A way to just freeze everything that's bugging me and give me some time to breathe. Sometimes, it's really needed. =P

Real:  I like my Mobile

Hey Commodore, screw the contacts!  The glasses are awesome!  And . . . Damn the logistics of a Clan shindig!  I don't drink beer, but sounds like it could be an awesome time.  Could you imagine a live Echo Screen with the whole Clan!  Hey, there's an idea.  Maybe it's something that could happen during one of the Cons.

Real:  I like my Mobile Banking App  on my Alias 2.  Check my balance anytime/anywhere (in the Verizon Network and I have yet to come across anyplace where I am not . . . T-Mobile and AT&T however . . . . )

Plausible: I like the Emulator App idea, but I kindof do that with my netbook.  With the way I have the keys assigned, it's like a giant DS.  It would translate well to a dual flip phone like the Alias.

Or . . .

Perhaps an App that makes the Echo Screen truly interactive through a video conference-type interaction.

Outside the box: Instant money is a good one, Arkus.  The teleporter would be great.  Replicator?  Genius.  I'm thinking actual Lightsaber App.  Open the App and your Lightsaber extends ready for combat!

Check out Ashens' series Back Space (can be found at http://www.ashens.com/ )  for some rejected Apps and some nice lightsaber duelterviews.

A realistic APP

My sister had to think of something like this for her college and when we were spitballing we came up with the idea of an app that reads barcodes and presents immediate information, reviews, etc of a product.

Like, if you scan a book you could see info about it, reviews, common prices, online availability, etc.

For food items it would also provide additional information in an easy to read format, such as recipes with or including that ingredient and things of that nature.

My app would be time control

My app would be time control (not to be confused with time travel).  Specifically, I would use it to freeze or slow time.  As I get older, I always wish there was more time for leisurely activity.

If time travel is asking too much from an app, how about one that adds a day or two to the weekend?

@Dexterslab234: You mean like the Silverhawks villain Timestopper?  As long as it was longer than a "Limbo Minute" that might be cool.

First time commenter long time witnesser

First I'd like to say: Hey The Commodore, great stuff, nice thoughtful discussions on things.

Next: The was a gross omission from the ranks of great cartoon tunes in that list, probably the most catchy cartoon theme of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZFdz2vwU20 - The Clone High song by their, what would you call it, house band?  Anyways, awesome song.

Finally, regarding the App question: I would like to see one that suppresses all advertising occurring around me, be it on my computer, on the radio (ESPECIALLY on the damn radio), on the sides of buildings, whatever.  If there was a program I could write into my own brain that did that I'd be a happy man.

Right, thanks for the effort you all put into this stuff, great podcasts, they really make my day go by while I'm at work.

Going against the grain here a bit, but I don't have any apps on my phone. I even took off the preloaded ones.

Not sure what I'd want.

@TommyJames:  wow! Never watched Silverhawks, but that was sure a blast from the past! haha

Tho I haven't figured out the limits of my time stopping/slowing app, it would certainly be better than Guldo's "time freeze".  (The little green guy of the Ginyu Force from Dragonball Z)

He could freeze time as long as he held his breath.

There's NOT (yet) an app for that!

If I could have one app, it would be a simple one. Earthbound. It would have slightly cleaned-up graphics and a slick touch interface. And I personally think it would be cool for you to be able to control Ness on his bike by tilting the device ( just sayin')

APPS???

Hey, Awesome weekly ringer, and all the posts gave me multiple nostalic jumps aswell! Was wicked!!

Right, so bit late to the party but..... honestly, yes it a tad annoying, but in the long run most apps are helpful to some people, and so it doesnt bother me. If dominos wants to put out an app where you can order pizza and play pizza space invaders while "dropping the kids off at the pool" then thats fine. I suppose they could stop harping on about it quite as much.

Anyway , and App wise, I dont know really. An APP that breaks the laws of physics is awesome, and I looove Male White Mages App "Manager".  But if im going to be honest, I would love an App that could connect to my mind, so browsing the net etc would be SO fast. Something that speeds up the communication between device and me.

OOORR an App that dispenses every kind of tea......and a mug......and ginger snap biscuits.

I want an app that uses some sort of frequency to keep creeps away on the bus. and train.

AND

an app that streams some of my favorite movies like Harold and Maude and Little Miss Sunshine straight into my brain so I can watch them in boring lecture classes or during awkward family diners. without anyone knowing.
