Interview with Reid Young (Starmen.Net)

Reid Young, co-founder of both Starmen.Net (the biggest EarthBound fansite on the web, and creators of the Mother 3 English Fan Translation) and Fangamer.net was good enough to give an interview with me at PAX East.  Watch to find out some little known history behind the fan translation, interactions between Nintendo and Starmen.Net, and his thoughts on why EarthBound endures as one of the biggest cult hits ever.

People like Reid Young, who

People like Reid Young, who have an absolute devotion to a certain video game, really remind me of what gaming should be about. I've lost a lot of respect for the gaming indusrty this gen, because everything seems to revolve around 'hardcore or casual' gamers or graphics - but listening to Reid Young in this interview, and hearing his delight about talking about EarthBound really reminds me of what true gamers are really like.

It has also made me wander something else too. He has an avid devotion towards EarthBound, so much so that he did all those petitions just to get EarthBound, or another Mother game, released again. My favourite franchise is The Legend of Zelda, and I've got no worries about it because Nintendo will always support Zelda outside Japan, but if they did with Zelda what they didn with EarthBound would I have tries as hard to get the series recognition as people like Reid Young did? If Nintendo released A Link to the Past to the same fate as EarthBound, and I played it as a kid, but then stoped supporting the franchise world wide would I have tried as hard as Reid to get another game released outside of Japan? I don't think I would have. That much hard work needs appluading.

Huh.

I never knew all that stuff. Well, great job, Roo and Reid! And Reid, your devotion to Earthbound is rarely seen in the world. Never lose it.
Wow, that sounded corny.

huh.

I wish some of the fanboys for some under appreciated sega games had such devoted projects. I mean, theres a lot of cult classics on the saturn and stuff, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, etc, but there's not really a big central community for these games. The only one I can think of that has a decent rally going is NiGHTS into Dreams.

anyway...

That was a really interesting interview. I'm glad I watched it. keep up the good work!
