So guys, I was wondering what music you listen to when it’s not video game related. What are your favorite bands or singer/songwriters? And what got you started?
I tought about the whole “what got you started” thing yesterday, when I saw a poster for the upcoming “American Reunion”. Most people probably would say their first encounter with music was their parents record collection. While that’s of course also the case with me, the one thing that really made me fall in love with music and spend every last penny of my allowance buying records, was watching the first “American Pie”. At the beginning of 2000 it just had hit German cinemas, so on my 14th birthday a couple of friends and me went to see it. Me being 14, I found it hilarious. Plus there were boobs!! But the thing which even got me more excited was the soundtrack, especially one song. There’s this scene where Nadia, the girl from Czechoslovakia, undresses and Jim runs over to Stifler’s house to watch it via webcam. “Mutt” by blink-182 is playing. I don’t know why, but this song ignited a spark. I bought the OST the next day and the blink-182 live album few days later. Looking back at it now it’s kinda silly that this teen movie and its cheesy pop punk and alternative rock soundtrack played such a decisive role, but that’s the way it was. I started listening to a lot of pop punk, then came emo, hardcore, metal, and so on. Now, I think, my taste in music is quite diverse, but I sometimes wonder what would’ve happened without that movie.
By the way, I also wonder who’ll be the people watching “American Reunion”. This movie probably is pure nostalgia, so it’s not very likely that it’ll reel in a new younger crowd. Which makes it a pretty bold move to make a movie like that, relying only on the hope, that people who saw the original movie will watch it for nostalgia’s sake.
So anyway, what about you?
Apr/26/2012 at 3:05 pm #7730Right now if I’m just listening to the radio I don’t mind the mainstream stuff. I like Foo Fighters though. I’m also a fan of the 80s and some 90s music. Some of my favorites:
Depeche Mode
The Cure
Roxy Music
Duran Duran
Simple Red
Apr/26/2012 at 3:30 pm #7734I listen to all kinds of stuff, usually kind of randomly, from classical to dance to jazz, etc. It just really depends on my mood. I’m not dedicated to any one type of music either; I find that especially hard when I find that music is like just about anything else, in that 95-99% of stuff out there is complete crap, or just..okay and not worth your time, but the rest is worth looking into. I can tolerate something from just about any type of music though, except most rap and country, really.
I suppose what got me ‘started’ was….probably my parents just turning on the radio when I was a kid and seeing what was playing. I actually can remember hearing music in the car such as Walk of Life, by Dire Straits, Billie Jean, by Michael Jackson, then later on, Show Me Love, by Robin S., The Sign, by Ace of Base, Mr. Vain, by Culture Beat, Zombie, by the Cranberries, and so forth. My tastes have also just natrually changed over time though; I used to like heavy metal a lot more than I do now. Typically, if I want metal, I just turn to Metallica or sometimes Ozzy Osbourne, but the thing is, these guys are so different to me from most other metal, but in a good way, so I appreciate them more. Ren and Stimpy played classical music in their cartoons, so that only helped turn me more onto that, but I also appreciated a lot of movie scores, such as by John Williams, too.
So yeah, it was honestly just a combination of things that occurred naturally over time, and it can’t really be pinned down to one, or even a few, moments. But eh, I’m sure a lot of people are like that.
Apr/27/2012 at 2:07 pm #7752I forgot to add and embarrassed to say that I also listen to J-Pop sometimes… It’s a Secret to Everybody!
May/02/2012 at 5:49 am #7802I’m the same as ShirowWolf, mostly my mood dictates what I listen to, I have taste in every genre of music, Classical, to Hip-Hop, Jazz to Techno, Rock to Chiptune, I like stuff from all ends of the spectrum.
but the two of my favorite artist/group I listen to is:
Billy Joel and Gorillaz
I base on how good they are with how much of their songs I like and they are tied for the number one spot. I have 6.4 days or 3,841 songs in my ITunes with no end in sight so that might give you an imput to my my music taste.
May/03/2012 at 4:06 am #7810Iron Maiden. The Misfits. The Doors. The Stooges. The Ramones. The Sex Pistols. Butthole Surfers. Tenacious D. Violent Femmes. My father was a big fan of acid rock and picked up a few bands from the radio or MTV early on, but mostly introduced to my favorite stuff by friends.
May/03/2012 at 6:05 am #7812When I’m not nerding out to Movie, anime, video game soundtracks, or even J-pop, (Gnashvar, you’re not alone,) I like a lot of different types of music. I always have headphones on me, but what is playing through them often depends on my mood and what I am doing.
Some of my favorite bands are:
The Dreseden Dolls/ Amanda Palmer
Cake
The Doors
Noisettes
Jefferson Airplane
Imogen Heap
The Killers
Belle and Sebastian
I’ve also been starting to listen to some opera since my younger sister is studying it at music school.
May/23/2012 at 1:03 am #7928The Stooges, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, the Buzzcocks, the Misfits, the Violent Femmes, Bad Religion, MC5, Bad Brains, Megadeth, Motorhead, the Damned, SOAD, COC, GBH, the Exploited, the Cramps, Black Flag, the White Stripes, Television, Xray Specs, Butthole Surfers, Iron Maiden, the Doors, the Yardbirds, the Animals, the Kinks, Type O, the Minutemen, the NY Dolls etc.
My mom is a dirty hippie. I started listening to hardcore and punk as part of my whole teenage rebellion thing. Still LOVE it more years later than I care to cop to.
May/29/2012 at 12:34 am #7937If I told you the name of one album that I like, you could probably guess my entire record collection from that. My taste in music is very predictable. London Calling gets played quite frequently, and I pretty much like anything by The Who… yes, even Pete Townshend’s often horrible solo work, although Empty Glass was actually quite good. I both love and hate Pink Floyd. Meddle is an excellent album, but everything they produce is so unbearably pretentious…
Jun/09/2012 at 7:01 pm #8027The Beatles
Elton John
Elvis Presley
The Police
Bruce Springsteen
Unicorn Kid
Michael Jackson
Those are some artists I’ve been listening to as of late.

Jul/25/2012 at 11:24 pm #8349The anthem of my teens: Gang Green’s Alcohol
Jul/28/2012 at 2:16 am #8356I can’t get Marina and the Diamonds out of my heads lately. Especially the song I am not a robot.
