Hello everyone. I wanted your opinion on this hack/mod of the original Castlevania 2 for the NES. This is an idea I had for the longest time. What would Castlevania 2 have been if the things people said in game would actually make sense and the changes day/night wouldn’t be so painfull? Well it looks like someone did all these changes. Here is a youtube link to how the game plays. Just looking at the game makes me want to play without a guide.

Now my other idea is to actually load this rom into an actual Castlevania II cart. Do you consider this a bad thing? Is it videogame sacrilege? Should I just buy a kit from Retrozone and make a new cart? How far can a hack go to improve a game and still keep it faithful to the original intention?

I think this would be a good topic for the weekly wringer.

Now I just wish it had the translation from the japanese game for the night/day thing.

“And so the shiver of the night has arrived”

“Like a nightmare, the night has ended.”

Putting it in a cart doesnt sound a bad idea at all to me, its not like you intend to sell it on so I say go for it but I would make a new cart. I dont know about the process but it sounds like putting it in an actual castlevania 2 cart would mean you’d have to wipe the original rom? Hmm seems a bit too much to me. But that said its your cart, I just wouldnt wipe the original personally.

I destroyed a copy of Castlevania III to play Just Breed on an actual system because Castlevania III is the only english NES game to use the MMC5 mapper. It’s not easy to make a repro cart, and I’d suggest just requesting it from a reproduction site. Many of them will make a specific repro if you send them a rom. You may have to send a donor cart, but if you really want to play it, go ahead.

I wouldn’t do it myself. I don’t have the knowledge or hardware to do this project. Now that I think a bit about it, it’s a good way to save carts you find in rummage sales that are in crappy conditions. Use them for something else and keep the cart alive :D
