The bombshell dropped last week – Disney buys Lucasfilm and a new Star Wars trilogy is coming, starting in 2015. We know you must be so confused, wondering if you should be shouting for joy or gathering pitchforks. But worry not! We’ll be happy to discuss the matter with you and figure out if this is a new hope, or phantom menace.
(See what we did there?)

I will say that after reading that Lucas is planning on donating much of the 4 billion to charities…..my respect for him went up a lot.
As for the business and transaction, I really don’t care that much either way. Its was his property (and apparently little to no debt), so he can do as he pleases. I am against this new era of disney just buying all sorts of rights to characters, possibly limiting creativity in new works. We really see this with Marvel too.
Finally, for Star Wars as a whole, I know its the geek bible and what not. I also know it goes against my geekness as well, but I’ve just been kind of done with Star Wars now (the recent weekly wringer had a lot of people with similar feelings I felt). For a while actually. Its not even entirely the prequels fault. I just got tired of it being plastered everywhere. It aged well in the 80s and 90s, but not very well in the 00s (the prequels and internet culture definitely expedited this). I honestly think its time for it to “ride off into the sunset” and become part of americana in a way similar to The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, etc.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make tonight’s Echo Live Screen. This makes me really sad. I do have a question if you guys decide to jump on it for the Q&A: How do you think Disney will influence the Star Wars series? Examples could be different compsers, cgi/special effects, alteration of the expanded universe, etc.
I really don’t know how to feel about this. On one hand it really pisses me off that Disney (known for a singing mouse and a hot tempered duck) is now in control of one of my favourite franchises. I really feel that their control will limit the creative freedom of this new trilogy and possibly turn the new movies into children’s movies. Agreed, some might argue that this happened years ago (in my eyes, ep 1 was a children’s movie) but I’ve always hoped that should they ever make a sequel they would embrace a more mature/grown-up direction (insert random star wars-porn-spoof-joke here).
On the other hand you could look at this as a glass-half-full kind of situation. I can’t help but feel that the less George Lucas was involved the better the movie turned out – just look at ep 5. I personally think that the great George Lucas has done this series more harm than good since he released the ep 1-3. Those movies were mediocre at best and didn’t help the franchise in any significant way. At least not in my opinion. And PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong but those movies were more or less his creations without any creative contributions from outside directors or writers. However I will happily admit that I did like ep 3, so maybe I’m a bit too negative… My point being that maybe this is a golden oppotunity for the series to move forward and expand (perhaps even improve) this amazing universe without mr Lucas interfering.
I was about to say I coudn’t make it either, then I noticed that the date on the headline is set for tomorrow. See ya then!
I look forward to this one, I am not excited about this.
Oh snap! I was so tired, I didn’t even notice. Thanks Vulcan!
Lucas can no longer directly hurt Star Wars <3 Maybe people can start thinking fondly of the franchise again
im not a star wars fan or anything like and i dont realy care, but it is good that at least somebody is bringing this franchise forward.
a jump in generation is allways good. a switch in company “can” allways be good.
sometimes you just have to let go.
