Hardcore gamers in the 90s was about PC vs console. Hardcore gamers payed out major bucks for a graphics card and upgrades just to play a single game. Console gamers might pay the same amount to play several games.
I kind of laugh at people who consider themselves hardcore gamers, but exclusively play consoles.
(I never had access to a high-end gaming rig. But older, discounted games could work on most computers.)
